In this half-day workshop Steve Baty will present a range of techniques to help project teams identify sources of innovative concepts and methods of concept generation. The focus of this workshop will be on concepts that break the mold and challenge accepted bases of competition. Participants will work to identify their blind spots and overcome them as one of the key barriers to new ways of thinking.
The workshop will cover:
A brief introduction to innovation and strategy
Sensemaking: design synthesis and the role of insight
A framework for innovation
Industry cliches: identifying industry common practice, and doing something different
Reframing: looking at the problem in new ways
Challenging constraints: “What if…”
Participants will leave this workshop with:
A framework for identifying blindspots
Techniques for generating design concepts within the innovation framework

Steve Baty likes to understand how complex systems behave, and redesign them to improve the outcomes for the individuals and organizations operating within. He is a Principal of Meld Studios, an award-winning Australian design studio. He has over 18 years of commercial experience applying the philosophy and methods of design to tackle the challenges facing organizations.
Steve sits on the Good Design Council of Australia. He is the founder of UX Book Club; co-Chairs Australia’s UX Australia conference; and served as Chair of Interaction|12 – the annual conference of the IxDA for 2012. In 2012-2015, Steve served on the Judging Panel for the Good Design Awards and will be judging the Business Model Innovation category in 2016. He was a judge of the Interaction Awards in 2012. He also served as President of the Interaction Design Association (IxDA) from 2012-2014, and sat on the IxDA Board of Directors from 2009-2014.
